As in everything regarding art.... it is a subjective matter.
I like all of Metallica's albums except St. Anger. I like the hard core stuff and also the more "lite", cholesterol free ones..
Artists are entitled to express themselves in distinct ways..there is nothing wrong in sometimes showing a softer side to music.
I am not angry at Eric Clapton for writing and singing "Tears in heaven".. he experienced a terrible loss and wanted to project that feeling. It became his hugest commercial success.... so be it. Good for him.
So whoever is angry at Metallica for doing different stuff and being soft or mellow once in a while is wrong.... because as musicians they have the right to do it and I applaud them unconditionally. I don't expect artists to be machines and pull tough and hard stuff over and over... they are humans just like we are.

Master of Puppets definitely. Maybe Ride the Lightning and possibly ...And Justice For All. Kill 'Em All is a thrash classic, but I'm not sure about it being a metal classic overall.

Metallica isn't the worst metal album ever, but the other three pretty much are. Definitely. 'Specially St. Anger. What were they taking nu metal influences now?

-raises hand-
Metallica /could/ have been one of the best metal bands around at the moment - their first four albums were f*cking amazing, but the last 3 albums in particular are simply dreadful. I tried to sit through St. Anger [the song] the other day, and I just couldn't do it.
I don't think Metallica [the Black Album] was all bad though, it wasn't to their usual standards but it wasn't a disgrace either.
What it *did do was mark the beginning of the end for them - it's a shame.

[edit;] haha the curse of Bob Rock, yep I've definitely noticed that. They've dropped him now, but they're bringing Rick Rubin on board. Now I might be mistaken, but isn't that the fellow that works with Linkin Park? If so, anyone that had high hopes on the new album being better should just forget about it, ha.
[edit;] But he /did/ work on the Reign in Blood album by Slayer - so maybe there is some hope.

I was disappointed with "Metallica" (AKA the Black) album when it was first released but i began to like it after a few listens and i still do like it. It's not as good as the first four albums but it's a helluva lot better than the "Load" albums and "St. Anger". And the least said about the "S&M" album, the better.

To Wretched Spawn:
After seeing Iron Maiden live twice, i can safely say that they can beat Cannibal Corpse live just by playing one note.

Thankyou you deserve a star...

One good thing is that Metelicas new producer for there new album is supposably making them go back to there old school albums it was stated it will be something in between "And justice for all" and The Black album lets hope so cos when i heard saint anger for the first time i nearly rammed a knife in my ears it was weak and pitiful especially when you know they can produce albums like ride the lightning, and justice for all and master of puppets...

We will soon see i guess.....

I agree, the first four albums was thrash metal (and Metallica) at its best. The Black Album was a HUGE disappointment, but isn't that bad. It still has some heavy songs like Enter Sandman, Sad But True, Holier Than Thou, and The God That Failed. But damn, I miss Cliff, he was a awesome bass player and was the one that made Metallica so unique and great in the beginning. Rest in peace Cliff.

Opinions are like a**holes, everyone has got one. ;)

While I hated St. Anger, it's the only album of theirs I did not like, and I certainly can think of many other horrible metal albums that were far more wretched than St. Anger.

**edited to add: no, you asked if these Metallica albums were the "most vilely wretched excuses for Metal albums ever produced".

You didn't say the "most viley wretched excuses for Metallica albums".

and justice for all is the greatest album ever made!!!!!!
i cant go a day without listening to at least one song from that album. But it was their last good album. From the black album on they kinda lost it. Each other album has a few good tunes but thats about it.

Dyers Eve is the greatsest song EVER!!!

St. Anger... oh dear.
The first couple of songs on that album really had me laughing, especially when he just repeats the same words at the end of a song, very affective.
By the end of the album, I was just sad and disappointed;
Sad because I spent 14 dollars on a CD I'm never going to listen to again and disappointed because I can't believe Metallica could make such a piece of ****.
I really expected more out of them and in their case, it would have been better for them to burn out and not fade away. Then maybe their music could leave with dignity and we can remember the good stuff.

What a vilelly wretched excuse for a poll!

Metallica makes records nowadays to make money. They don't do it to conform to any art form.

Their fans are loyal and buy the records. They buy tickets. They go to shows.

Their fans are the only thing that needs to be satisfied in this equation.

I personally like all of Metallica's music. They just changed a lot between their first four and last four albums. Just like I changed a lot from their first four and their last four albums!
