We bought a used dryer, which had a four prong plug that we had to replace with a three prong plug (we live in an older house). It worked fine for a couple weeks, and then all of a sudden it wouldn't start. I really don't want to haul it to town (we live in a rural area) unless I have to. Any suggestions on what we could try?

The dryer is a Maytag Performa.

Four prong plugs are mainly for mobile homes. In those cases you have the two hot leads (220) the neutal wire (white current carrying gounded conductor [grounded at the circuit box and case]) and the ground wire.(non current carrying conductor)

I'd check and more sure I didn't trip the breaker first. You know your dryer might take more current and needs a larger circuit breaker. You'd be surprised at how many times I've gone and checked for friends after they got a new appliance and that was what the problem was.

What you might have done is not connect the current carrying neutral when making the change over #1. You might also have not gotten all the wires good and tight (loose connections) #2. You might not have gotten the wires in the lugs good and one slipped out #3. Moving and banging it around you might have loosened on the terminals insided the dryer. [that reminds me I need to reconnect the light in mine before my better half pitches another fit about it]. #4. The belt might have broken or slipped off somehow. #5. [some dryers have belts that go all the way around the drum, others to just a pully on the drums.]

check your plug connection inside the dryer first and make sure nothing has come loose(make sure you unplug it first). Look for any signs of arcing, then check your breaker box and see if it has tripped. If you don't find anything there then you may have to seek a proffesional's advice.

Check your breakers and the connections to the dryer for tightness and if they are ok, go to this site for a very easy troubleshooting guide. -
