Fuel pump?

If you are sure that the fuel pump is working, Then I would guess that installing the battery backwards has damaged your ecm (computer) The ecm turns on the injectors at a spectific time with infomation it gets from the crank sensor and amount of time it keeps the injectors open for from the oxygen sensor that reads a rich or a lean mixture. If it is running with fuel being dumped into the motor, then I would guess that the injectors aren't opening up.

If all the fuses are good, check for spark. If no spark and the injectors are not working there is a good chance that the ECU was fried. If there are check engine or service engine soon warning lights, make sure they come on when the key is in the on position. If no warning lights light up, it's another indicator of a bad ECU. No doubt mechanics at the Ford dealer have run across this before so I'd give them a call.

Replace the fuel filter. Are you sure the pump (or both, some have two) is working?
