Winter is not the time to be contemplating building nests. A responsible bird knows winter is the time for small species to flock and find shelter as mature birds, as birds that no longer need nests to support them find roosts. Only immature birds that can not stand on their own claws need the nest to shelter them. Once fledged birds leave the nest and learn to survive on their own seeking a warm, hidden roost either singly or in flock dormitories for the night. Only when it is time to mate are nests the order of the day for a young bird's nest is its first home before it goes out into the world.

Find a farm and a barn. Offer to do chores for the farmer in exchange for a nice pile of hay in his barn. Find another person to keep you warm at night in the hay. If you really are hungry than offer to work for food. But first, find a farmer with a barn. Make sure the farmer has animals because they keep the barn warm and there will be hay to sleep in.

build it someplace where you have shelter from the rain but not on the ground as animals or floods will come, a place where it can be warm and is convenient for you to access
