I still think this was the best one year team of all time. of course the Pats can overtake them this year.
The Bears were still good in 1986. The club posted a 14-2 record and won the NFC Central for the third consecutive season. But what seemed like a dynasty in the making crumbled due to post-Super Bowl partying. Quarterback Jim McMahon showed up to training camp 25 pounds overweight and injuries limited him to playing in 7 games. He never was the same after he separated his shoulder on a vicious sack in a Packers game.
it was not the Giants who stopped them, but the Redskins, who beat them 27-13 in the NFC divisional playoffs. The Skins scored 20 unanswered points in the second half. Of course the Giants won the SuperBowl that year.
So I wouldn't say they were all as bad as TO, but they didn't do themselves any favors either.

Not even a fair comparison. The 85 Bears D ran the 46, which was pretty much made famous by Buddy Ryan. Marshall, Singletary and Otis Wilson were the best three linebackers to play together. McMichael, Hampton, Dent and Perry never allowed anyone to rush the ball. 2 shutouts on the way to the superbowl in the playoffs has not happened since. As far as the comparisons to Urlacher and Singletary though - people who say that Singletary was better are not doing justice to Urlacher - noone has ever played middle linebacker like Urlacher - Singletary was more of a game manager, but not nearly as good as Urlacher.

There was huge locker room strife which eventually ended with Ryan leaving to coach the Eagles. However, the '86 defense was actually better than the '85 one. Check the stats for yourself! The '86 offense was not as good though because McMahon was hurt a lot of the year.
Basically the '85 Bears were a team composed completely of Terrell Owens. They were great but they were never very disciplined. ESPN has an excellent documentary about that team and the reasons they came apart after 1985

Well mainly the New York Giants happened. The bears were very good in '86 but not quite good enough, and the Giants were great in 86. Also McMahon started having injury problems and they didn't have a good backup QB. After '86 McMahon was useless, there was no QB, Buddy Ryan had left, Walter Peyton was getting old, and things unraveled.

Easy, Buddy Ryan left the team. He was the real leader of that team. Mike Ditka was a joke, Fridge getting a TD for example. He's probably the most overrated coach in history. Still Chicago fans love him even though he cheated them out of a dynasty.

We have to say it.
The league was more compepetitive, there were other great teams like the 49ers, Giants and Redskins.

Buddy Ryan and Mike Ditka did not get along and that along with the players egos did them in.
