Billy Weakster,
No, I genuinely didn't.
I got to be a great-grandad without knowing the whole of scissors, paper, stone. The depth and breadth of my ignorance is quite extraordinary.

You know Dave,
I've always really resonated with Hakuin. He saw doubt as a rhinocerous, standing powerful and implacable in the way of true understanding.
But I have not yet heard the big cricket - only a few of its little brothers. lol

Paper wraps stone - paper wins, stone loses
Stone blunts scissors - stone wins, scissors lose
scissors cut paper - scissors win, paper loses
Every one wins one and loses one.

This is what I was taught:
1. Rock beats scissors because you use the rock to bash/dent the scissors.
2. Scissors beats paper because the scissors cut up the paper.
3. Paper beats rock because you wrap the rock up with the paper (and give it to someone for a Christmas present!)

A cricket made a series of churrs at the foundation stones of the temple. The instant they reached the master’s [i.e., Hakuin’s] ears, he was one with enlightenment. Doubts and uncertainties that had burdened him from the beginning of his religious quest suddenly dissolved and ceased to exist. From that moment on he lived in a state of great emancipation. The enlightening activities of the buddhas and patriarchs, the Dharma eye to grasp the sutras—they were now his, without any doubt, without any lack whatever. (in Waddell, 1994, xviii)
