*News reports say American children are obese?

not all american parents are bad parents, but there certainly are parents out there that are not taking accountability for their children, their health, their education, etc...too often american parents blame outside factors for any detriment that their children face. parents are no longer in taking control of their children and keeping an eye on what they consume. the media doesn't help either though. most food advertising is aimed towards children because they are the next generation of consumers with incomes. so the media is getting to them and priming them for future spending and consumption. children learn eating habits from their families. if you are a child that has parents with horrible eating habits and cabinets full of junk food and empty calories, then it's likely you'll adapt those habits and carry them on thru your life and then to your future children. parents now want to place the blame on other things like McDonalds and think that such companies are at fault for their children's obesity. well, parents are the ones in charge of the pocket book and meals. they have control over what their children eat, they just choose to be negligent until the time comes that their children develop type 2 diabetes. that's when they blame anyone but themselves.

News reports say obesity is a global issue. Americans aren't the only fat people on this earth. Many factors are attributed to obesity.....the fact it's global makes me seriously wonder if hormones fed to animals and some genetic manipulation done to other forms of food aren't also a serious problem. I don't believe the true tests are in on that subject yet. Many times we never know till decades later and then we get a "woops....sorry bout that....latest research shows...." Something to consider before placing blame solely on parents. Some might be....but I don't believe it's all. We all aren't drones and some things effect others differently. I know I've looked in the carts of people shopping who are heavy or have heavy children....it's 9 out of 10 times not filled with cookies and chips and junk food.......but it does have frankenfood apples and potatoes and hormone fed beef and milk products because they can't afford the more expensive "organic" kind.

I think the obesity epidemic in the states is more related to the high availibilty of unhealthy food from cheap, fast food restaurants and the fact that kids are spending way too much time inactive sitting in front of the TV or computer. Parents should be encouraging their children to eat healthy food and making sure they get some exercise everyday for an hour, that is their responsibility, and yes many of them are neglecting that. Many parents feel that it is unsafe for their child to play outside, so they keep them indoors.

Would you rather hear that they are starving and commiting mass murders?
Granted, our children are becoming obese, but it's not necessarily the fault of the parents.
School lunches have been the largest culprit of the childhood obesity.....serving fast foods and high calorie sweets and sodas.

Today's children come from 2 working parent homes, sadly there is no one to prepare healthy meals for them, so they {children} choose fast food fixes.
I hope you're doing better by your children.

I know that I am not the best with our diet, but one area that I see the problem in is activity. I think that because of PSP's and Wii's, the kids sit around playing video games all day. I think that, even with the diet, if they went out and did activities, they wouldn't be as obese. My own son plays video games and would probably do that all day every day if I let him. He is now running track, bowling, and swimming at least 4 of the 7 days a week. We had been worried about him gaining weight, but now he has slimmed down.

My sister's kids are 3 years old and they use the cell phone when they talk to me because they are a long way away. Still use the cell phone, does that make her a bad parent? They were learning to talk when they were really young, they could say alot more than alot of kids did at 2 because she sat down with them and worked with them. You see what everyone is doing "wrong" but I will repeat the question that Jeff said....do you even have kids?
