I currently live in Ohio, but plan to attend SBCC in the fall of 2008. I just wondered if I could transfer to the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) after spending one year at SBCC. Even though SBCC is a community college, is there any sort of social life there? And lastly, is the acting program good at SBCC and UCSB?

The UCs take very few transfers from community colleges after only one year - in general, you would have had to qualify for admission to the UCs already upon graduating from high school, and they will require the SAT and look at your high school grades to make the decision. If you apply after two years, on the other hand, they have enough of a college track record that they will consider your performance at SBCC, rather than high school grades, and won't ask for the SAT.

Obviously, as you stated, SBCC is a community college and doesn't have much of a social life of its own. However, UCSB is a major party school, which means that there is a party scene in town. Hang out at the right bars (oh, yeah - you'll be a freshman, so you can't do that!) or meet people at the restaurants, bookstores, etc., that people tend to frequent, and you should be able to have a social life.

Now, on your last question, I looked online and got a surprise. I fully expected not to find much about the SBCC theater department (since most community colleges don't offer much), but to see that UCSB had a good one. What I found was two mentions of the theater department on the SBCC homepage, including one announcing that they had won a "best of" award. Apparently they are good AND the school takes their theater department seriously. On the other hand, I had a really hard time finding mention of the theater department at UCSB. I finally did find one, in the College of Letters and Sciences, rather than in the College of Creative Studies, where I assumed it would be. It sounds fine, but the only news item I could find was that they have a new building, which didn't tell me much about what they were doing.
