Self-confidence cannot be built from the outside in. It needs to come from within you.
First of all, turn off your TV and radio. The media makes money by making people feel inadequate. They promote a materialistic attitude: You must buy more stuff to feel better and be a good as the Jones'. This even exists in a market for self-help products/books that claim to help you feel better through postive affirmations (that's what a call from the outside in).
After you tune out, you must learn to have a "profound self-acceptance." Some people have found this through religion, meditation, or philosophical reflection.
I don't have a simple solution or instant formula. However, I do know that the typical American who is inundated with media messages does not have much self-confidence.
Get away from the pack and learn to value what is important and true. Regardless of your religious beliefs (or lack thereof), I believe many people can benefit from the philosophical teachings of Buddhism. If you have a strong philosophical framework, this can help you maintain a stronger sense of self, a positive attitude, and a high level of self-confidence.

Self confidence is a by product of achievement, achieve something and you will feel it acting confident will only hurt you later. This age and society there are lots of pressures and expectations to live up to so that taxes confidence any way. The best and easiest way is learn a new skill (ie cooking, martial arts) and become good at it you will feel the differance from within and that will affect you in everything else you do in life.

Make sure you look your best always. Love yourself and think of it as a unique and special individual. REspect yourself and your mind. Respect people and treat them the way you would like to be treated. Always keep a smile on your face and be friendly, then you would be well liked and confident.
I've always had very little self confidence and I kept asking this question. I didnt understand when people said.. just have some self confidence.. I didnt know how to back then but now it just came to me. I'm not always that confident but def. alot more than I was a few years ago.

Believing in your abilities.
-turn off the television and radio, throw away all those celeb magazines - they feed of your insecurities etc
-start doing things you like, such as painting etc, and you will grow in confidence in that dept.
-don't fall for every man that pulls you....all they want is one-four nights of sex, and nothing more, and you come out with heart ache, and a lack of self esteem which affects your self confidence
hope some of this helps
keep plugging away at it.
