Some people are offended by everything, and have nothing better to do than gripe.

Well, in many places you are told not to say Merry Christmas or display the nativity scene but it's ok to say happy holidays. If we do have freedom of religion then we should be able to pray where and whenever we want, say Merry Christmas, and display nativity scenes. Yet others get offended by this. I have always believed that Jesus was the reason for the season so if you take out that part there is no holiday. Why should we stop saying Merry Christmas or In God we trust, One nation, under God? We been saying these things for well over a hundred years.

I'll start off by saying that it's not that we are offended by the phrase "Happy Holidays." That's fine, at least someone is making an effort to be friendly and extend the well-wishes of the season to others.
It's that we're offended that some people think we're rude if we say "Merry Christmas." You know what, if someone of another religion uses their phrase of choice in school or public or wherever, you don't see people calling up the ACLU and proclaiming that their religious rights have been violated. We can't talk about Christianity, but we can talk about everything else under the sun.
Frankly, I don't really care a rip if a clerk at a store wishes me anything, as long as they aren't rude. Which is VERY rare these days, especially around the HOLIDAYS....oh wait, Chrishanukwanzika.....oh what the heck...MERRY CHRISTMAS, folks!!!

Well not ALL Christians are, I'd venture to say not even most.
But a handful of noisy talking heads like Bill O'Reilly invented this phony "War on Christmas" These talking heads also fabricated many lies such as retail stores threatening to fire people who said "Merry Christmas" and that entire towns had outlawed the wearing of red & green clothes. Unfortunately, I think some otherwise rational Christians, may have bought into the lies, and have allowed them to get whipped up into a frenzy.
I am not offended by "Happy Holidays" OR "Merry Christmas" What is funny, is I RARELY, if ever had hear anyone say that "Merry Christmas" was "offensive. And by the way the phrase "Happy Holidays" was around more that 30 years ago when I was in school.
It is funny to hear people ranting on about how some people are too touchy for being offended by "Merry Chrismas" but all the screaming is about the phrase "Happy Holidays".
I know that MOST Christians have not jumped on this silly bandwagon, and I know MOST Christians did not buy into this phoney "War on Christmas", but I wish they would be a little more outspoken about all the false witness that is going on in the name of their religion. Perhaps they are, but the media is just not showing it ?

Hey, did you know that not only Christians are offended by being made to say Happy Holidays? The people that we are supposedly offending are likely those he have very thin skin and want to ruin the fun for all the people who do celebrate Christmas. Who CARES if you offend someone for saying Merry Christmas to them? How in the world could you possibly be offended by that? I am not telling you that I hope you die. I am telling you that I hope you have a Merry Christmas. That is NOT OFFENSIVE. Sorry, I hate people that want to control every aspect of people's lives. Its like the same people that take away smoking in bars, and then raise the price of cigarettes to an astronaumical amount. Its not NECESSARY.

I am like you...just because I am Catholic and celebrate Christmas doesn't mean everyone does...so if I am at a store or something, I tell the checkout person Happy Holidays...I figure it covers it all. I know other Christians who are offended...but all I am trying to do is be sensitive if it is someone I don't know well enough to know their beliefs.....you just can't win with some people!

Well I wouldn't be offended, but it sounds rather silly on your behalf. You know, if you were going to celebrate another religion's special events (say a bamitzva etc.), how would you like someone saying "HAPPY HOLIDAYS"? Wouldn't that sound rather sick or rude to you too. Something about religious tolerance has gone far astray. Wishing someone a "MERRY CHRISTMAS" should be taken in the spirit to which it is given.

because they truly believe in Jesus having been born on Christmas. If you say happy holidays to them, some might take it offensively because they do not believe in the other Gods or religions. They might see it as you not honoring their religion or their God? they need to realize that there is more than one religion around and it's better for anyone to just say happy holidays so they don't offend a person in case they don't celebrate christmas.

I feel that christians get offended because you take the christ out of christmas. I say happy holidays because it feels right. Sometimes people go too far and need to lighten up.

I am not offended by Happy Holidays. However the reason is that we are a Christian society and our believes are based on a believe in Christ. We as a nation have become so politically correct, because diverese ethnic population we have that in an effort to not offend our newer immagrants, we have opted to offend the basis that our country was fonded on and that is Christianity.

the whole reason Christmas is Christmas is because of Jesus Christ. If he were never born there wouldn't be a Christmas and saying Happy Holidays takes Christ out of it. that is why christians are offended by this because the whole reason christmas is is because of Jesus. Don't worry about offending anyone though because one way or another you will offend someone with anything at some point.
