Easy way to tell. I you are using/downloading/sharing copywrited material and you don't have the license to do so, that is illegal.

Now the actual P2P program is in the gray area, because there are legal uses for the program. And the End User is the one that violates the law depending upon the use. Just as Chevy sells cars, but the drivers may violate the traffic laws regulating the vehicles on the road....

The programs are legal, it's the procuring of the songs that is illegal. Filesharing is generally illegal as long as the material in question is a copyrighted material, unless you were given consent by the original artist of the material. To find some legal trial downloads, look for official sites of the artist or the company he/she is signed on to.

P2P or file sharing programs are not illegal, they are use all the time to share data between computers on the web. But, downloading copy written material with out the artists permission is "illegal". I think you can take it from here.

Any time you steal anything that belongs to someone else, it is illegal. There is no way to get free songs legally.
