I only ran across one REALLY rude person like that. I smiled sweetly and said, "Diana (her name tag), Jesus loves you so much He died for you, but I think you're being a real jerk."

I have had great days and not so great days working on the other side of the counter. Usually my customers are delighted but there has been the odd occasion. Once I had a customer who wanted a BBQ chicken without seasoning who was bullying one of my juniors to check all the chickens, I had to be very forceful with her and I got reported. Sometimes i have even been in the wrong and got reported.
I usually persevere for a while whichever side of the counter I am currently on. Actually I quite find it interesting to deal so well that by the end of the transaction the customer is apologising.
It doesn't have a happy ending though, as I always had long queues even when other operators had nobody waiting and department mangers would never let me transfer.

I don't often get rude salespeople, but on one occasion when I was about to pay for a pair of slacks, the salesperson was irritated about something. He made a comment that was snide, and it was obvious that he wanted a similar comment in return. I thanked him for his time, and I said I hoped that his day would become better and that I hoped it would not be an imposition upon his busy schedule for him to return the slacks to the section, and then I left.

I do not wish to bring myself down to the level of a rude and obnoxious salesperson. So if I feel that some salesperson has intentionally offended me - I just walk out of the store - after having secured their name and the department head's name. Then I go home and write real sizzler of a letter to the President of the store and tell him that unless I get a written apology - my business will go elsewhere! Usually works! CJ

I ask for a supervisor and explain in front of salesperson how disappointed i am that a store with such a reputation would hire such a rude, unaccmodating individual who obvious is a warm body, goes to job to collect paycheck, has no interest in job, customer or company and therefore i will take business elsewhere where i am treated with respect i deserve, after all with out me you have no job.
I am not rude or disrespectful, do not sink to their level, afterall they have no morals or ethics - blame parents, government and schools. manners and respect used to be taught at school, now even govt leaders have none.

Your grumpiness isn't winning me to your side either.
By the way, I was never rude to my customers and was very successful. I left when my store was sold to a company that didn't care about its merchandise anymore.
I was even voted best salesperson at my mall, and my customers loved me.
I rarely encounter a rude salesperson because I'm not rude to them. I encounter plenty of rushed ones, and a few grumpy ones, I smile at them and ask sympathetically if their feet hurt.
Its surprising how treating them as humans can elicit a very human response.

I am a very successful business to business sales person and have been a sales manager also. What I have found is that pushy gets you nowhere, it just doesn't work. No one likes a pushy sales person. My mantra is "sell as you like to be sold to". Simply ignore, they'll be flipping burgers in Mickey D's in a month.
I like to critique the sales people who approach me, I tell them I'm in professional sales, have read 100 books on it and taken a myriad of classes. Then begin my critique, the bad ones walk away.
Sales people are supposed to be there to enhance sales not deter!

If I am shopping I say, I will let you know if I need you. If I am at a counter and they are rude, I kindly remind them that I am the customer and would like to be treated more kindly. Or sometimes the look is enough.

I just smile and very sweetly say " you have a better day" leave my items at the counter and walk out. If they are REALLY rude I tell them that their mothers must be very disappointed in their behavior and they should learn more respect. Then talk to the manager.

I say, "Thank you for your help, but I need to talk to my husband first." Then I leave and look elsewhere for the thing I want. If I can't find it anywhere else I go back another day and try to find another person to help me.
A couple of times when they really irritated me, I ask them to hold it while I get my extra stash out of the car. Then I don't go back at all.
