He did violate company policy that is there for his own safety. Look at it this way- What if the man had fought back with a weapon instead of running. The employee could have been seriously injured or killed. Then he and/or his family would have sued for it because he was acting for the company. I agree firing him was wrong. They could have written him up or suspended him for a time.

I do not agree completely. He was clocked out, and he was making a Citizen's Arrest. In some states this does mean you can physically restrain the person with no fear of punishment, example North Dakota. Also the fact that the physical contact happened off of company property 'should' be taken into consideration. I have to agree with what he did, and said, "I would do it anywhere else." I believe this reflects on the lack of responsibility of the company for their own products and it isn't one that I personally would wish to work for.

He should sue for a paycheck for the rest of his life. Whole foods is aiding the criminals, by punishing people who standup for what is right. Why in todays society are we more concerned with the feelings of the criminals, than we are the right of the individual to fight against those who have no morals?

It is their published policy. The store has the right to fire an employee for breaking published policy. The store would rather lose some groceries than have a customer or employee injured or killed. It's really not a bad policy as it relieves employees from having to confront a thief.
