Life means lots of love, happiness and giving 150% to all, never expecting anything in return and respecting your fellow man. The most important thing to acheive is contentment and satisfaction - happiness will automatically follow.

Life is the necessary burden that we all share. No one can escape our being finite. Life, at bottom, is meaningless. But does this mean that one then commits suicide? Maybe, maybe not.

Camus tackled this question in an original way in his "Myth of Sisyphus". What Camus was here getting at is not that life is terrible in light of the wishes/ideals we have envisaged of it, but that it is perfect and the true (philosophical) suicide is believing that it is not. The divorce occurs when the concept of immortality comes into play. We realize that death is inevitable - it can't be gotten rid of. Instead, we take away perfection. We sell ourselves out to the idea that achieving something important would make our lives "worth" something. This is the product of an animal who is always scheming/making deals, but rarely thinking.

2000 years of philosophy perhaps only scratches the surface of this question. I would start with Camus, then go back and read Plato's dialogues, particularly the Euthyphro, the Apology of Socrates, and the Symposium. Yahoo! answers probably won't give you much more than a mere summary of someone's heavily biased worldview.... (and I leave myself open to the idea that what I am writing here is exactly one of those worldviews).

Every bird that sings is singing for love. Every flower that opens is opening for love, and every eye is in search of love. Every heart beats for love. Love is the very meaning of life. If there is no love, life becomes meaningless.

When people start asking, 'What is the meaning of life?' that simply shows that they have not been able to find their love; hence the meaning is missing. Now there is no way to find it. If you cannot find it in love, then there is no other place to find it. Then you can go on searching, but it is in vain.

All that we achieve in life is dreamstuff, unless you come across something -- something which is deathless and which death cannot destroy. But to come to that, one has to work hard. It is an uphill task. We just remain interested -- we don't move into it.

Whenever a good interest is there, we should do something to materialise it. Otherwise things come and go like fashions. I have seen many people who have become interested in Zen; then by and by they become interested in other things. The mind goes on changing. You can go on changing like that every six months, two years, three years.

Then a new phase comes, a new thing becomes prevalent. People start talking, gossiping about it -- sometimes about meditation, sometimes about this and that. Everybody becomes interested -- as if it is new movie on the TV and everybody is talking about it. One has to know about it to be respectable, to be part of the high-brow society. Just like that, Zen has become an interesting subject. It is not an interesting subject. It is one of the most arduous things.

WOW Deep question--if taken seriously. I guess the most important thing to me is contentment and happy. I try not to look back with regrets--I try to live in the present. I love helping others along the way. I am a giver by nature--so I do not always put myself first. But I am speaking from advanced years of experience. This might make a difference. Good luck to you.

Wow, deep question. :-)
I guess this is a very personal answer which will be different for all of us. Life, to me, means trying to be the best person I can. The most important thing for me to achieve is to make sure that my kids are healthy and happy.
It would also be kind of nice to not have other religions proselytise at me, telling me I'm evil just because I don't believe in the same things that they do. Spiritual paths are part of what shapes a person, and to achieve the one that makes you truly happy by yourself has to be a major part of life does it not?

Life means living the moment. Feel that the path that you tread has not been laid by you, by a force with a predesignated purpose; remember that you had not been born, with any effort on your part. Hence, live and accept the life as it comes to you. If you want to achieve some thing in life, achieve the grace of God.

Life to me, is Beautiful, but pain full. Corrupted, but fair. Short, but satisfying. Complicated, but easy going. I can't see myself without, but knowing that one day to meet the end.

To me, the most important thing to achieve is paying attention to the beautiful instead of the pain full. be fair among all the corruption. Find the easy out of the complicated. And most of all live a righteous life in order to never reach "the end"
