Well it stays in the archives. If the asker doesn't pick a best answer it goes to voting. If no-one chooses then there is no best answer for that question but your answer will stay "on the record". I've noticed that people must just vote for best answers to get points - usually the first answer, whatever it is, gets the vote. I think people just go through clicking each first answer without reading the rest.

If the asker doesn't rate your answer as best and nobody else rates it as best, then you have received 2 points for your answer. Good job! Congratulations! Don't spend it all in one place!

The answer is listed as a tie and will remain a tie until someone answers the question. Some are a year old. I found one that was in voting as of early 2006. Try voting and see what happens!

It will go to a vote.
Then much later - if no one even votes for a best answer - the person asking gets the points back for asking it with a message - no best answer was chosen.

The Question will have to wait until somebody comes along and rates it.
