Brian is partially right, but like a lot does not fully understand the issue. Let me explain it fully. A 32 bit OS can see a total of 4GB of memory. However, something a lot of people either don't know or think about in this situation is that there are two types of memory, RAM and Virtual memory. Virtual memory is part of the hard drive used as memory. Your computer is using 768MB of virtual memory, giving a total of 4.75GB, too much for Windows to see. Because Windows will ALWAYS see the Virtual memory first, it can only see 3.25GB of your RAM. Either disable your virtual memory or get a 64 bit OS, which can see far more than 4GB of memory.

hi mate
windows xp 32bit will only recognize up to 4gb(3.99gb) of memory so this seems as bit odd as your only getting 3.25gb
in my experience when this kind of problem occurs i tend to switch the modules order and check again, this happens as some modules may have different latencys or differently designed chips,or it could be that some of the chips or one of the modules may be defective
your best bet is to run the online memory tool at http://www.crucial.com/,this will scan your p.c and return a correct amount and if its still reading 3.25gb then i would check each module for example...insert a module at a time and see which module is reading just 256mb
this may sound starnge but the shop/company that sold you the memory may of accidentally sold you a 256mb module by mistake, and if so they will happily change it for the correct 1gb module
good luck and happy new year mate !

a 32-bit version of the os can only detect and use 3.2 - 3.5 gig of ram and not 4. this is not shared among graphic cards, it is just that the 32 bit version is built this way. the only solution here is to buy a 64-bit version of the os.

I think 32-bi operating systems only detect that much, but all 4GB can still be used.

Because your OS is 32bit not 64 bit.

You should check your display / monitor - you could be sharing resources. This setting can usually be changed and you can increase or change how much the monitor uses.

the missing amount are already dedicated to the display, meaning that the .75 gb ram is like for the display and shared between the system..its normal..
