Hello I answer your question with another question. why must a large group of people need a king? But i must not be rude so I will answer your ? first. Castles are important for five reasons in my opinion one is that it fortifies the town, another would be it preserves the safety of all things inside, thirdly if there is revolt or even insertion the king will be safe at least for awhile, also castles form a center ground for the community, and finely lastly for showmanship

It was a place for the entire town to gather if under attack.

Castles were the ICBMs of the Middle Ages. They served to provide a safe haven for armies. They guarded strategic points - look how often they are built on hills, beside river crossings, for example. They were a sign of strength to cow a subject peoples (Edward I's ring of castles in Wales is a prime example).
