Originally Santa Claus was based on the old legend of St Nicholas who was a rich nobleman but who, unfashionably, respected the poor and wanted to make their lives better. He did this by dressing as a Woodman and, in the dead of night, would visit their houses and throw bags of money through the windows. This is where the myth of Santa bringing presents on Christmas Eve came from.

Naturally as a woodman he would wear the same clothes as they did and this consisted of a long green coat and hat with brown trimming that would blend in with the forest and act as a sort of camouflage. Around 1930 the Coca Cola company decided to hold a massive advertising campaign and paid thousands of people to dress in Santa Claus outfits of red and white, these being the company colours, and to give promotional bottles of Coca Cola away standing outside department stores and shops. The idea caught on and almost overnight the uniform was adopted internationally, a great coup for the company.

The new, modern day Santa Claus wears a coat of red, with trims of white (click on the link below).

However, in the 19th century, Santa Claus wore green. This is the Santa that the "Ghost of Christmas Present" was based on in the infamous "A Christmas Carol". Later, the Coca Cola company showed Santa in red in advertisements and people soon began to prefer this red version. (Personally, I too prefer the Santa in the red coat.)

Santa's coat has always been red with white trim.
Before Coca Cola got hold of the character, he wasn't Santa but Father Christmas.
