This generation is jut continuing in the slipping of sandards which are also affecting morals, scruples and common decency.
You probably see it as your stand against the establishment, a way to make yourselves stand out, yet what you are doing is dissasociating yourselves from the rest of society.

Yes I hate it, I don't even abbreviate in text messages it just sounds so thick.
It also really grates me when you go the higher education category and you see posts like that: 'I want 2 do law wots da best place'?! I know it's a minor thing but it's just so irritating to read
I would also like to add that I am far from posh but I know how to articulate myself when I have to

Not a very good calibre. National english scores for grammer and vobulary has been slightly declining over the past few years. Proper american english usage has also been over ridden in some cities as the official language, promoting usage of slang, or street talk in some schools. If those does continue than I do believe that there 'could' be some social disturbance, because it will make a greater distinction of classes and cause some social upheavel. I mean, would you want to employ someone who can't even speak proper english? I've had to work in these areas and watch business clients leave because who wants to deal with someone who sounds uneducated? Not many. Thankfully my children also have noticed this on their own without me pointing it out, but still I am constantly having to correct them on proper word formage when speaking. One already has a college scholarship and wishes to attend Annapolis, but do you think they'll let her slide with, "Theys all do it!" No, no matter what, because that isn't how an officer in the military speaks, or if she wants to study law. Hopefully they will realize this sooner or later. A new form of short hand is acceptable, but when it carries over in to normal day to day speech, that is when the problems begin.

This is why the American College Board added a writing portion to the SAT test. It , too, was concerned that Americans in their senior year of high school could not even type a simple email coherently. And I don't think its a sign of the times at all.. its a sign of laziness. As an English teacher, I refuse to grade essays with that garbage in the essay.... it gets a zero and there are no make ups.

I have no objection to slang, I choose not to use it myself. What I am concerned about is that their English is often very poor, and slang seems to be the first language for many. If we cannot communicate our thoughts well we get frustrated. Perhaps if young people had a better command of the language they would not be quite as frustrated and insular.

The problem is that we need language to develop our civilisation and the use of language for the first time in the history of man is declining. I would like to know if the French, Spanish or for example Mandarin languages are being corrupted to the same level

Yes I hate it as well, and i'm 15, so it isn't just the older generation who hate it. I hate to think that some people probaly answer exam questions in "txt speak" because they are so used to typing/writing in that 'language'.

Takes so long to decipher this "shorthand", for me at least. Keep having to google some abbreviations to find out what they mean.

It really does bother me! Oh my gosh, especially during text messaging. They created such mechanisms like T9English for a reason. I hate when I receive texts such as "I kno who dis is." It really urks me, and it HAS effected alot of people. I personally also hate simplified spellings such as "nite" and "lite"
Another pet peeve of mine is when sOmEoNe TyPeS LiKe tHiS
