And what you usually do?

It can be assessed most of the times for so many good reasons that the person is lying .

However I firmly believe, "It is a human right to consider everyone a truthful person until unless it is proven otherwise."

How I see thru...

- I am watchful to the ironical facts (which possibly informs about a lie),
- I consider the flow of message if it's chronologically flowing out of the mouth or the person is going to & fro of the story,
- It is the body language too; like eye contact, sitting or standing postures & many other such non-verbal queues,
- It is the breathing of the person, normal or fast (generally air gaspers are the liars)
- It might be the emphasising over an unnecessary point of least significance (when I am also one part of the situation, like office environment) to serve the designs,
- I also assess if the person is speaking rationally or not,
- And, of course, there are all ways the gut feeling!

I am in habit of listening to the people patiently & trying to read between the lines at first place, that is, what do they say & what do they actually mean!

Therefore, some call me 'smart,'
some call me 'I cann't be fooled easily',
some call me even 'shrewd' who is not ready to give in for the lullabies & to their notorious designs.

Body language is the key to determine whether a person is lying or not. Of course you have to be with the person face to face.
For instance, look straight into the person's eyes. If those eyes are not looking at you, but glancing up or down or looking to the side, that is an indication of being fibbed to. Another to watch for are the hands. A liar usually rubs his or her nose with a thumb or finger when fibbing.
And another is for you to bring up a subject matter that the two of you discussed and see if the 'story' is the same.
When I know a person is lying, I cut the conversation short and say I have things to do.
Phone conversations are a little harder to determine if a person is lying or not. From my experience, if a person tells the same 'story' in a later phone conversation and the context is completely different from before, it is a lie.

First, examine the question being asked. Ask yourself, if the question requires an indepth answer and if the person can get away with telling a "half truth". You want to make sure that you ask a clear-cut question. Secondly, look at their eyes. Generally, when a person is looking to their left, your right, they're thinking about the past. When they are looking to their right, your left, they're thinking about the future. Hope this little bit helps.

Usually, people who lie and have a conscience can't look you in the eye if they are lying. (Now if they are lying and without a conscience; they will be able to look you in the eye. Those ones are very dangerous--avoid them!) Once you've caught someone in a lie believe that they are capable of lying and cannot be trusted.

when someone is telling a lie, they usually blink more than often.

When that happens I look at the person straight in the eye with an icey cold stare and say 'Liar; and quickly say' if you reply back then you are lying'.

It depends on who it is.. I could always tell if the ex was lying, because he couldn't look at me in the eyes. Others I have come across, if it was something important to me.. I already had the answer before I ask them the question, so no matter what they said I knew the truth.

What I did depended on who it was a well..

Their voice drops in pitch at the lying part of their sentance
Their eyes go down and to the left apparently
Their hand can come up to cover their mouth involuntarily
There are other signs but I cant be stuffed trying to remember them all.

If it's my girlfriend yes. I've been around her long enough to know when something isnt right that she is telling me. She'll get really quite, cling on to my arm alot, hard for her to make eye contact, and hesitate on her words sometimes. Oh yeah and she also looks at her cell phone alot too...

if it quacks like a duck, it's a duck.

if it don't sound right, it probably isn't.

but there is one exception to that rule:

my former pathological lying husband (we're still married, he just don't lie anymore!)

anyway, when he did tell lies, they were good ones. but when he told the truth it was something so fantastic and unbelievable..when he was able to prove this stuff we were shocked..

no wonder he always won at balderdash...
