The best way to prevent sulphation is by keeping the battery on charge. Sulphation is caused by the self-discharge of a battery. And you cannot guaranty that the sulpher will end up on the bottom of the battery. Sulphation can result in dendrites that short one cell to another.

If you have a battery that you suspect is suffering from sulphation, about the best you can hope for is that a charge/discharge cycle will restore it. Be sure to monitor the battery voltage during discharge and ensure it is not depleted below the minimum voltage spec'd by the manufacturer.

It's worth a try to get a little extra life from the battery, if the alternative is discarding the battery. It's a gamble whether you'll gain enough life to justify the cost and effort of the treatment.
