It was C-section and my wife gets much tired with breastfeeding. We tried to overcome the situation with a little bit bottle feeding. We usually use bottle once in the night because at that time it is almost next to impossible for my wife to breastfeed at 2:00 in the morning. She is quite weak but also recovering. She needs rest to recover. Baby usually demnds milk after every 2 hours.

Now the situation is.. The doctor told us not to use bottle at all, he told that we should use Spoon to feed formula if we want. We CAN NOT USE bottle with nipples but we can USE Spoon to feed the formula.

Why is that so that he is insisting so much on spoon feed and telling not to use bottle with nipples?

We tried to use spoon but my baby is not able to take enough through spoon, while with bottle he is able to feed himself properly.

Please tell us what we should do?

Regards

I have no idea why your Dr. Said that. When our son was a baby we had no choice .... my wife did not produce enough milk. Finding a formula that the baby can tolerate is an issue all by itself. Formula is not as good as mom's milk.... hands down. You may also consider a breast pump. That way you can give your baby mom's milk at 2 am without your wife getting up. My wife used a pump with no problems. Good Luck and let us know what you do.

Your doctor is probably wanting to avoid NIPPLE CONFUSION. What happens is that the baby finds comfort in one nipple over the other, as in the mother's nipple vs. bottle nipple. If you and your wife are keen on breastfeeding then the advice of your doctor should be the best thing for you right now. At times, the baby prefers the bottle nipple because he/she doesn't have to suck as hard to take in the milk. It's a little more difficult with the breast nipple. If this happens then the baby starts rejecting the mother every time she wants to breastfeed her child...which could turn out to be quite disappointing and traumatic for the mother, depending on how strongly she feels regarding this. So first think about what's more important to you
Secondly, the first few days the baby doesn't need so much milk, so don't worry. But if you still feel that your baby is going hungry/is crying too much, then you might want to give the bottle a few more nights till your wife is feeling a little better.
I just had my own C-section 6 weeks back, and went through the exact same thing. I gave the bottle to my baby once every night and she did drink it up well. But after day 6 I started breastfeeding and 6 weeks later mommy feeding is still going strong...

Your doctor is probably pro-breastfeeding which is why he is insisting on the spoon for now..
GOOD LUCK!!

(oh yes, Congratulations on your new bundle of joy!!! They're worth the trouble, aren't they? :)

breastfeeding is hard for all woman, no matter how they deliver the baby, its tough! The reason, to answer the question, is because these 2 different ways of feeding make for 2 different sucking actions and it is best to stick to the breast exclusively until mum and baby have mastered the whole thing. Its just advice really, thats the thing about being a parent and you do what is best for everyone, the advice you are given should be sifted through and taken and implemeted as you see fit. It is my advice that you do what makes everyone happy, its hard with a new baby so if you dont think that the bottle is not affecting the babies sucking then continue to feed with the 1 bottle per night, but i wouldnt suggest anymore than that. good luck

ok i would change doctors if i were you! lol
I had a csection too and i breastfed all the time regardless of the pain! I wanted my baby to be healthy no matter what! even if it caused me pain
ok i understand not all women are the same so what i recommend is that ur wife pump out the milk and use a slow flow nipple for the baby .... ONLY at night .....
breastfeed every 3 hours during the day!

the doctor is probably worried about the whole nipple confusion bull ... but i personally think baby's are smart and know the difference .... they say when u breastfeed u shouldnt give the baby a pacifier cuz they'll confuse the nipple and not take the breast later ... YEA RIGHT ... trust me when my baby's hungry she will NOT take the pacifier lol she will turn her head towards my breast immidiately

Because it can cause nipple confusion, it can also ruin the breastfeeding relationship since bottles take less work for the baby.
If a spoon isn't working you can try a syringe. Good luck and stick with that Dr. I know a lot of moms who would kill for a breastfeeding friendly and KNOWLEDGEABLE Dr.

The spoon thing (waiting till the gag reflex is gone) is for solid foods, not breastmilk

You're doctor is probably advising you to do one or the other so the baby doesn't get 'nipple confusion'. That means that sometimes babies who are given bottles occasionally have problems latching back onto their mothers nipples and that can create problems.

I wouldn't listen to the doctor in this instance. Feed your baby however you want to at 2am!
If you want to give a bottle at night till your wife feels stronger than go for it. Rather than formula though, your wife may want to consider pumping/expressing her breastmilk during the day so you can feed baby breastmilk in a bottle at night.

Do you what you feel is best and remember its not the doctors baby or him that has to get up 60 times a night!!

Best of luck and congratulations

medical practioners insist on tellin lactating mothers forabsolute breast feeding for the first six months of life.it is because of the advantages to mother n the baby.besides if u use top/bottle feeds the chances of intestinal infections n malnutrition increases as bottle feeds do not have the required ingridients like human milk.by using nipple it causes increased chances of infection n causes nipple confusion you see when the baby is breast feed it has to SUCK THE MILK OUT OF THE BREAST BY USING OROL MUSCLES WHERAS WEN U BOTTLE FEED THERE IS NO SUCKIN BY BABY AS THE MILK COMES DIRECTLY TO MOUTH WITHOUT ANY WORK SO WEN THE BABY IS BREAST FEED HE FINDS IT DIFFICULT TO SUCK IN FROM BREAST N THIS CAUSES REDUCED EXTRACTION OF BREAST MILK N MALNUTRITION N NIPPLE CONFUSION.
GET IT??????
whereas by bondla/spoon feed this nipple confusion n infection problem is not there.
still dont get it, ask me again!

That is so strange. Use the bottle it is more like a breast than what a spoon is. A baby doesn't know how to drink off a spoon. I think the Dr might be trying to stop you from giving your baby formula by telling you to use the spoon as it is difficult to do and hoping you will give up and breast feed only.

My baby book says its because the bottle causes nipple confusion in the baby and may make the baby refuse the mothers breast in favor of the bottle. I was concerned about this with my first baby but it doesnt seem to matter to my second child. I suppose its a baby by baby thing.

Most doctors tell you not to use a spoon until the baby's gag reflex is fully developed. If the reason was due to nipple confusion, they now have bottle nipples that look and feel(to a baby) like real nipples eg. Gerber premium and Gerber NUK. Hope this helps.
