f(x) your function.
f'(x) its first derivative

1) solve f'(x) = 0
2) make a 'sign graph'

f' Positive --- 0 ----- Negative
indicates a local maximum

f' Negative --- 0 ----- Positive
indicates a local minimum

If the function is restricted to a closed interval you can also have max and min at the border points.

clear ?

find where the derivative equals zero; that will be a local max or min.

find the second derivative at the local max or min, if it is positive, the point is a min;
if it is negative, the point is a max
