No they're not real. However, rocket packs are. The difference being a jet engine pulls in air from one end, mixes it with fuel, compresses and combusts it, and shoots it out the other end to create propulsion. The rocket pack was invented in the 50's-60's and uses compressed gas, like a CO2 bottle for a pellet gun, for its propulsion. It's flight time was just 60 seconds however, so it was never used for any practical applications, and has been relegated to novelty demonstration uses and Hollywood movies.

The cleaning crew for Hoover Dam uses them to inspect for damages / wear and tear. They have a short fuel life and are not for play. They are tethered at top and bottom but, if detatched could be used for escape in case of a dam-break or fire. We are currently developing an alternative-fuel powered jet pack but, you will never hear of it again cause it's too expensive for mass production.

No. The US Army developed those back in the 50's. I think they were considered impractical due to the short flight time.

the boys at OCC choppers built a bike for the Redbull Company, and the pres of the company has a collection of them. When they delivered the bike, a guy used one of the collection to fly in and land beside the bike. So at least one of them works, but i think it is only used on special occasions.

Yes, here in the UK, because the country is so small. We use them for short journeys, like shopping.
