Writing a letter to thank a customer for purchasing the product is a very good idea. In this respect a sincere and short letter will normally be enough. I usually sign these letters personally. (In building goodwill, please avoid the computer generated type of letter)

Sometimes I include some form of assurance that the decision to buy is the perfect one (This is to tackle the "buyer's remorse" feeling). At the same time, occasionally I include more methods of using the product or other complementary products to enhance the enjoyment of the present product (This is what I call "top-on" selling).

Also do not stop here. Follow up with periodic letters to let the customer know that your company is still around and share new product range to show that your company is innovative and progressing.

Good luck. :)

A letter alone would not be sufficient,it will just get thrown away.
Include an incentive to have the customer return, such as some kind of a discount of at least over 20%.
