AAs far as adding oil, it does not matter what the engine temp at the time. For the most accurate, check it when it is cooled off and has not run for a coupleof hours. That allows the system to drain down and most will be in the crankcase.

well it doesn't matter if you are just adding a quart. if you are changing the oil , well I prefer to have the engine warm to let the heat lower the viscosity of the oil and have it flow out of the pan faster...you have to be careful when pulling the oil plug not to let hot oil hit your hand though.

Oil flows better when hot but this is not safe. if you can keep your hand on the oil pan its cool enough to change.

I would think ..... when it is warm, slightly.

Cold the oil may be too thick to get a true reading and hot you will burn the hell out of your self.

best to check with your car's manual/dealer

but I am told it's best to check it when it's stone cold.

another tip: do not check your transmission fluid yourself. it has to be a certain temp, at a certain idling..etc. best to let the mechanic check that. it also can burn you if you remove cap at wrong time, unlike the oil.
