Isn't there another solution?

My question wasn't WHY do we work. I kow it's to earn money to buy things. But my question is why do we work almost all our waking hours? Between work, driving in traffic and sleep, I have no free time unless I am up at night and end up getting little sleep. I don't feel like doing this for 40 more years :( am already burned out. I'd rather have lived in a different lifetime when when that was not the case, as in 99.999% of history.

Yes, it is a trap we willingly walk into. In fact, this thing is getting worse by the day... people are spending more and more time on work and to make money rather than on hobbies, family and friends. There would perhaps even be no holidaying if it were not a sort of fashion and a routine since most of the workplaces provide for paid holidays that lapse if not availed.
By the time one realizes the folly of it all, it perhaps gets too late to change or reverse.

I do wish that more people paid attention to how easily life is lost. Some spend their whole life working in miserable jobs, to gain what? Unless you believe in reincarnation or something like that then you have just wasted an entire lifetime. If you believe in the afterlife, then will you dwell on the past and wonder what you achieved? Some way to spend eternity.

I'm afraid that the current world we live in, you have to work (unless you are rich or have another way to get cash flowing in) in order to buy a house, buy a car. In order to do anything, one must work hard in order to obtain it.

You can either be a bum or get rich.

You could probably just need a vacation to think things through. You can get a job which more fulfilling and/or earning more.

Whatever job you may have, be sure to leave a portion for your savings every paycheck. You can invest in stocks or even start a business. When you see your cash flow increasing, you would probably keep on working and start enjoying it. Because you are reaping it's benefits!

I think we work more and more each time because the world is a sphere of ambition. We (or may be not we, but the company, the government, the country, etc) want more and more, more power, more product (since it will result in more money), more fame, more publications, more discoveries, more success in general, etc. So we are pushed to work more... By doing so, we make the world "better". I dont necessarily agree with that though... ambition brings jealousy, hate, competition, fights, wars, disequilibrium, or even simpler, less time to life life, less time to be happy, less time to love.

humans were not created to work around the clock as we are doing... the winter months are months in which we all should be resting..from all our 8-9 months of labor there are a lot of things that are not necessary that we work at that can happen in a seasonal market don't you think? we are just plan greedy and j trying to out do the other people you know we all must have cameras. don't get me wrong life is easier with some of our hard work .

I agree with u. We do spend our entire lives working. We spend our lives trying to earn money to buy things, with the hope that one day we can all buy that dream home in France or afford an expensive bottle of Champagne. In the end we never get to it because we are working to hard to get it.
Im not sure if u have watched the movie "Last Holiday" with Queen Latifa. Its a real eye opener.
People dont realise that happiness never comes with material objects.

And then we die.......for nothing...I mean who knows...someone might get hit by a car tomorrow and not do what they wished to do. Heck,,,I dont even know what I wanna do when im older, I think I should be a monk.

Edit: But you can do that to have generations of kids...You're working so your kids and possibly their kids dont have to do much work..What I mean is that youll be rich and then you can spoil your kids so they can live freely and they can spoil their kids and so on =0)

Life is short so see, hear, taste, and touch better. Perhaps, there's something there if you take a second glance. We're all looking for something right? I think it could be right there in front of us, but hidden and clothed--until our inner eye expose.

It's just a matter of finding a balance for the lifestyle you choose. My motto is that I have to work to live not live to work.
