They're certainly not family pets, I don't care what the dog lovers say. In this case it wasn't the parents dog, but a relative. I know the old excuse, 'it's not the dog it's the owner' etc, which is valid to a point, but certain breeds of dog attract the more moronic elements of society and how do you stop some people from owning them and not others? Dangerous dogs are banned but maybe the banned list should be revised?

It's complete rubbish to say dogs don't just bite for no reason. They are basic animals with hunting instincts and some are just born nasty, as with some people. Some breeds are naturally more aggressive than others and it is generally these which cause the problems.

Some of these breeds were never meant to be kept as pets. They were bred for their vicious nature from the beginning. The doggy woggy people have no idea of what they speak and little imagination. I have been rushed by these sorts of dogs and was terrified, and I am 6 ft tall and well built. Imagine how panicked and terrified a child of 3 or 4 would be in the same circumstances, as these beasts rushed with their jaws at face level or above. AWFUL !!!! Ban these dogs. Anybody whose dog kills a child should be treated as having committed manslaughter. This would concentrate a few peoples minds wonderfully.

Even the soppiest of Rottweiler can suddenly turn on someone - adult or child, and it angers me why these families put this status thing before the safety of their own children! Some ignorant owners train their dogs to be more aggressive by goading them continuously. In this latest case, the one big punishment is that they've lost their child but that's no compensation for that innocent kid lying in the morgue right now!

I don't think you can ban them as they are god's creatures just like you and me, but I don't think that so-called dangerous dogs should live amongst children as it's impossible to keep an eye on them every second of the day. Small kids don't understand how to treat animals with respect and can easily rile them up unintentionally! My friend's 3 year old got bitten by a dog just a couple of months ago because she was crawling around on the floor towards it. It thought that she was a predator and bit her on the face. Luckily it wasn't serious but this was a family dog, not in the dangerous dog category!

Have some sympathy man. It is a tragedy. Condemnation has no place in this situation. If you have children you will know that accidents lurk everywhere, it really does take a second, and every parent can recall a lucky escape. Any charge that you can level, these parents bitterly blame themselves of, only a thousand times worse. They will be sad for the rest of their lives. Give them a break. If you are so moved by the dangers this child was exposed to, work to have pools, ponds, bodies of water, designed with the safety of children built-in.

A dog behavioural expert on the BBC this morning referred to dogs as "the wolf in your home", a realistic assessment of what the nature of a dog really is. They are pack animals, which we have domesticated. They naturally assume leadership, if no-one assumes consistent leadership over them, and a small child can be seen by them as "lower in the pack".

Some people don't seem to understand that all dogs are capable of biting and mauling. Dogs need careful training and handling, and should never be left alone around young children.

As for these Rottweilers, pit bulls, etc., families with children under ten should not be allowed to own them, and the dogs muzzled in public. Also, all dog owners should be required by law to go through dog obedience training classes.

Its makes me mad. My Great Grandfather was a pioneer in breeding Staffordshire bull terriers, in those days they were fighting dogs as well. But they never went at children. Because the likes of him knew how to handle the dogs. He also had respect for the dogs and the dogs respected him.

Nowadays people are cross-breeding any vicious dogs just to have a trophy dog. They can't handle or care for the dogs, plus a dog like that shouldn't be trapped in a house, and never walked. It will send them mad. A dog doesn't know, how to sit down and talk it out. A dog's natural alert is to attack.

I don't blame the dog, I blame the owners. They should be made an automatic guilty plea for ownership of a vicious dog.

Yes I agree with your statement 100%.
These dogs are not family pets at all. They are vicious animals. That poor child. My heart goes out to him and the family.

Patrick.....Take a look at what you have wrote and think of this.
If your child was out playing and someone elses' dog escaped and attacked your child to within an inch of its life, would you still be sat here blaming the parents or would you blame the dog?

And how would you feel seeing people write what you wrote when your going through every parents nightmare?
Have a heart will you. Yes, it's different if you are a parent and you own these type of dogs but, when they are someone elses dog what can you do?
And dogs do bite for no reason. It's their nature for some of them. You tell me what a one year old child could do to deserve that? Just think??

i would say you should never leave a dog alone with a child full stop and it does not matter what breed it is. Yes bigger and more powerful dogs such as this are more worrying as if they do attack you have a smaller chance of stopping them rather than a smaller dog. But then again the owner has a responsibilty to train their dog well as the terrible event that just occured is proof enough that this will continue to happen.

All dogs contain a vicious streak when attacked or tormented, so you really are taking a chance leaving a small child alone with them, especially when the dog owner has no control.

When my last dog died I swore that I would never have another. I had a Alsatian, every time someone came to the house I put the dog outside, Whilst out walking people would want to stroke him, I had to dissuade them. The dog was jealous of anybody that came near me. So sorry no more dogs at this house.
