I do have an original XP disc but the internal drive on my laptop is broke. I hardly use the internal drive so I dont really want to replace the drive due to cost.

Plug the laptop in, restart and hit F8 when it boots up. It will give you a list of options, you can select these by using your arrow keys. Select boot device and if your external drive is an option then you will be able to use that, if it doesn't appear then I think a new internal drive will be your only option. Have you considered restoring your computer to its original instal using System Restore or even "Factory Settings" if you have that option

An external CD/DVD drive? Yes, it is easily possible. Just make sure the laptop can boot from the external drive and away you go.

An external HDD? Possible but more complicated. You need to copy the CD to the HDD and you'll need to boot to DOS or some other OS in order to access it.

If you meaning your CD/DVD drive is broken, the answer is YES, you can but you should have BIOS of the laptop support the boot from CD/DVD.

But if you meaning your H.D.D is broken, the answer is NO, you can't because the external H.D.D don't has MBR (Master Boot Record) so no partition can be set active.
