If you going by record, the last time i checked, Boston was 24-3. They're on a roll right now and they're looking really confident, but it's too early to tell. They've played 29 games, that's no where near enough to tell whether or not they can compete in a 7-game series with the Pistons, Celtics, or Spurs yet.
Plus if you're going with winning streak, Portland has the upperhand on that argument. Lakers have beaten pretty decent teams, but the only compelling victory over a good team was against Phoenix on Christmas. The other wins over the Spurs (didn't have Parker or Duncan), Utah (they're not good on the road), Nuggets (overrated), and Rockets (haven't lived up to their hype), are not as convincing as it is on paper.
If the Lakers get a win over the Celtics this Sunday, then i'll take it all back and say that it could be argued that they're the best.

they ar now tied for the 3rd best record with the hornets in the west so they ar doing preety good. the lakers have a better record than dallas, nj, cleveland, and better percentage than orlando. the lakers are good but not the best, personally i am a huge laker fan though

Hard to say they have the best player in the NBA it's all going to come down to whether some of their role players like Odom, Brown, Bynum play
