Look, You can share the same internet connection in two ways. Firstly you can set up your Desktop as Host and Laptop as Client. For that you need to establish a network connection thru your laptop to dektop using a Network cable or Bluetooth or usiing Ethernet ports. Your base computer i.e.desktop should be connected to teh net while you are trying to surf internet through laptop. This i thnk is bit expensive because when you have no work with dsktop and want to surf net on laptop still you have to put your dekstop on. where as if you try the second method you have to purchase an extra ADSL Wireless Router which will enable you to surf intrnet wirelessly, ad keeping you desktop off. Your laptop needs to be Wi-Fi enabled and if not then you have to purchase an Wi-Fi- Data card. By this you can surf internet more efficiently. Try D-Link routers it will cost you arround Rs.3200 if your computr s Wi-Fi enabled. Connect your ADSL line to Router and take one wired line to computer and other one transmision through Wi-Fi.

Thats Most Secure and Efficient and convinient

Well, the best way is to use a router. They are cheap and allow both machines to surf and share files with the least amount of setup. Just get a basic one and set it up. If you get a wireless router, you would be able to use your laptop anywhere in the house without having to use a cable to connect to your desktop.

If you really want to use the XP as as host, you will need TWO network cards in the XP machine. One for the internet and one to "share" the connection to your laptop. Once those are installed you then enable ICS (internet connection sharing) on the XP machine and run a cable from the second network card to your laptop. Just remember for the laptop to work the XP machines will have to be on and connected.

But if it were me, I would spend the $30-40 (us) for a router!

you're going to do it by means of turning on the net sharing function in xp. you can also have got to get a moment nic card to your computing device. your first card talks to the mode, that card then does pretty much a router broadcas to the moment card, that's established to have an inner cope with. then you're both going to have a crossover cable to visit the computer, or you're going to get a small five port hub and feature the moment card as good because the computer attach utilising immediately through cables. then whilst you flip off your computing device, your computer might not be ready to attach. upload up the price and problem of operating ics and you'll be able to get a linksys wi-fi g router for fifty.00, plug the modem into the wan port of the router, connect your computer and the computing device with immediately through cables, or the computer through wifi, comply with the fundamental recommendations to get the router configured with safeguard and you're performed. you'll be able to then upload a printer to the router through wifi or a cable and a usb to ethernet converter and you're set. incidentally you can also need to down load a few application from microsoft in order that vista can see your xp field, within the early unencumber there have been a few protocol variations within the community vicinity that stopped vista from seeing xp. investigate that out.
