I agree with most of the others, The Stand is definitely his best work. However, it is a bit daunting when you pick it up. If you want to start smaller I would recommend either The Shining, or even Skeleton Crew, which is a collection of his short stories. The Mist and The Raft were my two favorite of his short stories that are contained within Skeleton Crew. Hope you enjoy!

About 6 months ago I was in your same position, I came on yahoo answers and asked people what I should read. And here's what I got for you
It really depends what you're into. Stephen King's genre is horror but I honestly don't find his books too scary. However when he is writing as his alter persona, Richard Bachman, he is very effective.
Stephen King best books to read-
The Green Mile (Longer)
The Dead Zone (Medium Length)
Carrie (Shorter)
Richard Bachman best book to read- The Long Walk, The Running Man
amazing books
STEER CLEAR OF "GERALD'S GAME"

Sigh. I have a hard time with this, even though I don't read Stephen King anymore. I would have to recommend 'The Stand' It is an impressive and well written piece of work, even if Mr. King does lapse into literary elephantiasis in spots. The Green Mile is also incredible, but very different from most of his work.

If you're going to start reading Stephen King be prepared for many a sleepless night. Not because you'll be scared (well sometimes you might), but because it's almost imposible to put his books down. I would suggest reading one of his earlier novels first to get a feel for his style. I would reccomend "The Dead Zone" first just because it's one of my all time favs. "Carrie" or "The Shining" would also be good ones to start with. I hope you enjoy and join the rest of us Costant Readers.

I'm excited that several people already chosen "The Stand." If you're going to read one book by king, this should be "It."

I have to go with the majority on this one. I would choose "The Stand." But if you don't want to commit to something of that size for your first time, try "The Shining" or "Salem's Lot."

My two favorites are: It and The Shining......better yet dive in and read them all.....Misery..is also good.
His son Joe Hill wrote The Heart Shaped Box....following in his father's footsteps, this is an excellent book.
