I don't know what chemicals you have access to, but there are books about chemical demonstrations by a man called Shakashiri.

Using just household items, one of my favourites is squeezing lemon juice into tea (keep some tea back as a control) and see the change in colour. The tea is acting as a natural indicator.

Another one (you really need an overhead projector for this) is to crumble a little bit of chalk dust on top of water in a beaker, focus on the chalk, and then, after instructing your audience not to blink, put a tiny amount of detergent on the end of a spatula or spoon, and very slowly lower it towards the middle of the beaker until it just touches. Try it.

I don't recommend messing with sodium unless you have a lot of experience. Incidentally, if you toss sodium into water, the water turns alkaline not acid.

my chem teacher showed me a video in which people tossed chunks of sodium into a pool, creating huge explosions. In the end, the pool turned yellow and acidic.
I want to do that so badly
