You can get some old books for free due to public domain, but if you want relatively new books like V. C. Andrews, you'd have to go to the library.
You could try going to Goodwill or a Salvation Army thrift store, or other thrift stores. They often sell paperback books from 25 cents to $1, that might be less of a problem.

Used book sales are pretty common - they're not free, but usually cheap. Only problem is there's no way to guarantee what will show up. Maybe you should work at earning some money and saving it, instead of demanding handouts like you were special or something.

Public library, you get to check them out for free (usually for a week or two). If you take longer to read them you can check them out again and take it back when you are done. Usually it's free but you may have to pay a small fee for a library card, usually less than $5

Check and see if you have a free cycle group near you...many times people have things that they want to give away. The key is that you have to come pick them up. Make sure to join a group near your home.
Best of luck...

If you don't mind reading an e-book, there are quite a few available through torrents.
