Why is the most important question of all. The why of something leads to understanding more so than the who or the what.

You ask 'why ask why'? I'll tell you why...
I just received my first violation notice because my question didn't have a 'why', that's why!!!
Though it was a question (no doubt about it, since I did receive beautiful, useful, thoughtful answers too!) but it started with a statement and question followed later. But some over-enthusiast didn't have patience to read full text & reported in irritation, I guess!
No problems. I did get my answers! It saved me the trouble of choosing Best Answer but, someone got robbed of the pleasure of earning 10 points. That's the only regret!!!

if i were to ask but one question, above all these questions i will ask, why ask why. to me this is the most sensible of all question. if you ask how do we ask? then you'll only know how to ask properly and nothing more. if you ask when is the best time to ask? then you'll simply know when is the best time to ask and get no asnwer to the real question. to whom one should ask will get you nowheres as you only know who to ask, but after knowing that, you are only entitled to one question. who should do the asking? this question can be answered by anyone, meaning anyone should do the asking.
i like the question why ask why? the question it self, why?seems to be rather negative. eat your food. why? sleep early. why? it seems to hinder us from our actions. indeed there is reason for everything, but then again why not just not ask?
there is a zen proverb i find appropriate for this question.
'kill the father as you meet him, kill the buddha as you meet him.'

I would ask such a question, that the asker would have no choice but to let me ask as many as I pleased. If however I was to find this task impossible, I would ask him this: "what question in THE question" of course I would not be able to ask another, but the answer would be one hell of a hint to decyphering the meaning of existence.

You ask why to learn something. You ask it whent you want to know. Ask the person who is most likely to give you the correct answer. You ask it unless you are chicken.

I believe that one should ask oneself all alone at night just one question; "How can I make the best of my life?"

well i would ask what... shouldn't you know what you are going to ask who, when, where, and/or why about?? you would need a subject to ask those about... and if you did have one then what wouldn't matter because you already knew that... sooooooo i would ask why if i already knew what... because you can get a better description and background of what through why...
