The most expensive diamond sold in price per carat is currently a 6.04-carat internally flawless, emerald-cut fancy vivid blue diamond, set in a ring, that fetched $7,981,835 at the Sotheby's sale in Hong Kong on October 8 2007.
Per carat, the stone achieved $1,321,590, soaring above the previous per-carat record of $926,000 per carat - set by the 0.95-carat Hancock Red diamond, which sold in 1987 for $880,000.

In total price, nobody can answer the question as most of the top diamonds are in collections and not for sale !

The blue Hope is a good candidate (Winston - The Smithsonian), as well as the Cullinan I - The Star of Africa (English Crown jewels), the Steinmetz Pink, ...
I would guess the Cullinan I would fetch the highest price, but we will know when they are all offered in the same auction :-)

Could be the Cullinan Diamond...
The Cullinan Diamond, found by Frederick Wells, surface manager of the Premier Diamond Mining Company in Cullinan, Gauteng, South Africa on 25 June 1905, is the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found, at 3,106.75 carats (621.35 g).
The largest polished gem from the stone is named Cullinan I or the Great Star of Africa (Picture), and at 530.2 carats (106.04 g) was the largest polished diamond in the world until the 1985 discovery of the Golden Jubilee diamond (545.67 cts), also from the Premier mine. Cullinan I is now mounted in the head of the Sceptre with the Cross. The second largest gem from the Cullinan stone, Cullinan II or the Lesser Star of Africa, at 317.4 carats (63.48 g), is the third largest polished diamond in the world and is also part of the British crown jewels, as it forms a part of the Imperial State Crown. Both gems are on display at the Tower of London, as parts of the British crown jewels.

NONE of them are worth anything..The only reason people pay so much is that certain people in high places only allow so many to be sold at one time...to keep the prices up..BUT if all the diamonds found that are in storage were released they would be worth less than a dollar a piece...
