I too love Harold of Wessex but he wasn't that Great - - - it is hard to define greatness for English Monarchs but certainly the standard was set by Henry the 1st despite his great flaws and one has to admire Edward the 1st but no matter how hard one resists it is impossible to avoid anointing Elizabeth Tudor as the Greatest English Monarch. Considering the odds overcome and the turbulence of the times I'm certain that Elizabeth the 1st would have stood above the pack in any era. I give Elizabeth the nudge over Victoria because Elizabeth was a hands on ruler and if need be she would have rode into combat. And Elizabeth was a gifted musician and linguist and a terrific dancer and if millions can go gaga over a celebrity dancing on TV then what the heck better standard is there for a Monarch?

Odd question but I'd go with Victoria. Her predecessors were simply monarchs but she held the title of 'empress.' Under Victoria, the British Empire grew to new heights, most notably the acquisition of India (which in my humble opinion was exploited to the fullest extent for 150 years).

I kind of like Harold the Great; unfortunately he died in 1066 not long after ascending to the throne so we'll never really know just how good he could have been.
If his brothers would have just followed his orders at Hastings . . .
