download this program which will tell you your whole pc specifications including your mother board.

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

I use this when I need to check my driver updates and compatability.

there are two ways, you can download a program called everest
from this website : www.lavalys.com/

it will tell you the names of all your fancy computer parts
and then you can consult your manufacturers website as to which card you should get.

if you feel secure enough you can follow the quicker path by opening your computer case and checking the motherbord for any print of the model, though you can tell if you have an agp or pci slot by the color, if its brown, its an agp slot, if its yellow or black its most probably a pci express slot, though it could be any other slot really like a regular pci or hell even an old isa slot and if you are not sure then you shouldnt even be allowed to open your computer case

iif you find you have an agp card, consult this webpage as to which cards are compatible with your slot: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agp#Compatibility

What you need to know is whether the mobo has AGP or PCI-Express graphic card slots. When it is AGP, is it 2x, 4x or 8x?

Go to the manufacturer's website to find out about this (Dell, HP, Gateway). Is there any documentation (HAHA) that came with your system?

Since you will have to open the case anyway to put in the graphics card, you might as well take a peek. AGP slots look very different from PCI-E.

There are three sorta current slot types:
AGP - fast
PCI Express - very fast
PCI - slow, and a primary market for them still exist because big name brand computers = performance sux and limited expansion.

The most sure fire way is to open up the computer casing and see what is available, notice the keying for incompatible subtypes did exist for AGP, probably so for PCI-E that makes the wrong card not even pluggable to a mobo..
