I received a summon for jury duty in the mail (I live in Clark County, Washington State). I read through it, and saw that my jury duty was in mid January, so I thought I could simply show upto report. I didn't see (in very small print in the corner) a passage stating "You must reply to this summons by mail in FIVE DAYS" and right below that stating "Failing to report to jury duty is a misdemeanor offense". I just noticed this today when I reread it. I'm mailing the letter first thing tomorrow with the highest priority, but I'm sure it's been almost two weeks since I got the thing. I'm wondering:

-Can I be charged for a misdemeanor in Washington State for failing to reply to a jury summons BY MAIL. I am ready and capable to show up to the actual summons.

Thank you for the replies, SERIOUS COMMENTS ONLY!

Their website on jury duty (http://www.clark.wa.gov/courts/jury.html ) doesn't mention anything about it - I'd just call the courthouse and ask. (I'm in King County, they don't require a written response to the notification here.) Judging by the wording you quoted, "failing to report" likely means failing to show up when you're supposed to -- not failing to return the notice in the mail.

Clark County Jury Duty

She isn't obligated to report for jury duty in a state she doesn't reside in. If she doesn't show up, the most they will do is cite her with failure to report, and she'll just need to have her documentation in order to prove that she was living and working in another state then. Keep a copy of her work stubs, statements from any utilities that have her name on them, and a copy of any official documents or applications that show your new address. If she has already applied to have her license transferred, there will be irrefutable proof already that she no longer resides in Washington state. Any charges against her (on the very rare chance she were charged with anything at all) would be immediately dismissed.

I live in the state of Texas. Did you know that they can't prove that you got that letter if you don't send it in. Throw it in the trash can and say what letter are you talking about when they ask. They Must send it Registered Mail in order to prove that you got the letter. Does that not make sense? They don't send those letters out Registered ,because they would cost to much money. They think that people are afraid and they will send them right in. If you send it in now you are admitting guilt and if you don't show up they will put out a warrant for you arrest.

Highly unlikely. They simply don't want people ignoring the letter and not send it in. Simply send it in and follow any other instructions they send you back.

You'll be fine.

You can be. But they are so overworked, they generally will overlook it if you bother to send it in at all.
