People say your never too old...
well that is true but not if your my age. lol
When you got kids a mortgage and have to keep your job (meaning I cant get hurt) then yes you can be too old. But at your age I say go for it!
Bones dont mend as easily when your 36 as they do when your 14.

Maybe you should give it a go and see if it is for you. The sport is a difficult one and many kids find that once they have had a bad injury they really don't want to get back on. You have to of course go through that to decide if you are one of those who are prepared to get back on after an injury. I have two sons who race and the older is very good but wont take it to the next level as he has been hurt and really didnt like the whole getting carted off in an ambulance and pain thing. Fair enough too.
My youngest does both Motocross and Supercross and is very good. He is A grade in Australia and has been A grade since he was about 10 years old. He is 15 now. Since he has taken the sport to the next level and races all over the country the injuries have begun. I really would like him to find another sport as I am sick of him getting hurt but he wont. In the last few years he has broken an arm, a collarbone, a leg, then both arms, then he dislocated his leg which is one of the most painful things you can do and it takes months to recover from in traction. Then he was just getting back into it and racing amoungst the best and winning when some stupid kid ran him over on a fun day and shattered a bone in his foot.
If you want to go pro you have to think about if you are someone who can get back on a bike and ride after injuries like this as you look up any of the top riders and their injury lists a very long.
The only way you will know is to have a go. You also need a good mechanic for your bike as when you start you can have a basic bike but you at least need the suspension set up for your weight otherwise it is too dangerous to race a bike with wrong suspension. When you get better you then need all the extras on the bike to be competitive. Reed, pipes, the better suspension, basically better everything. Then you need to have someone who knows what tyre to race on what surface. How to set the bike up for different surfaces.
Entry fees are very expensive as well. I dont know how much it will cost where you are but in Australia most event are around $100 entry then you have to get there with all the gear and there is always something that needs replacing on the bike.
Sorry if I sound like I am trying to put you off, but just painting a picture of how it really is. If you have your heart set on it then good luck

heck no your not to old!
alot of tracks have "open-practice" meaning you can go there when they arent racing and ride. You can get used to riding on the track so when a race comes you can be ready. Find you a track close by and maybe go to a few races just to watch. Talk around with people, learn some things, don't be afriad to ask questions. I'm sure they will be more than happy to help you out and get you moving in the right direction towards racing.

no way! i got my first dirt bike when i was like 6 or 7 and always practiced on the dirt track alot!!! but the weird thing is, this new guy comes in, just starting for like 1 or 2 years of practice, which means he got his at the age 12 too, and we raced, and he beats me! but i always did it for fun, he obvesly wanted to go pro like you and i think he was just "in it" more then i was. so if you are really thinking of going pro, and you really want this, and you will really practice hard to get it!, you are fine! and in fact, 14 years old is not that old! you are actully lucky that you found your "thing" now then later.....

No way! You have to practice to get good at anything so just get out there and ride around the track to get use to it. Once you're start getting more confident, your speed will increase and your jumps will get higher. You can be a pro if you put your mind to it! ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SAFETY GEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your never to old to start, but if you are wanting to make this racing full time, you will be competing for sponsored rides with people who may well be younger and better then you.
If you really want this, you will do it.
Good luck, and keep us all informed as to how you get on!

Find a local track that holds open practice and get some hours in on the track before you try your first race. Riding MX is going to be very different from riding the fields at home. You could just go race the first time you set foot on a track, but that would not be my suggestion. Ride several practice sessions and go to as many races as a spectator as possible. You can learn much from watching your peers.

There is never an age too old to start something that you really love and want to achieve in. Well, that's my philosophy anyway.
Go for it =D
