New York! It's where I grew up.
I think my decision would have more to do with family and food. I have a lot of family in NY; I have none in Hong Kong.
Also, I prefer Italian food to Chinese food, and now that I think of it, I haven't had a decent bagel in a really, really, long time.

York, New York would be my preference. Have to mention that there are more that 2 languages involved. The people of Hong Kong, for the most part, speak Cantonese, rather than Mandarin, which is spoken by most people in China, and English remains an official language in Hong Kong.

I love N.Y. and ,if I had a lot more momey in my bank account, that is where I would live!
However,in most polls taken, a huge majority of our citizens hate N.Y. and even claim that it is "not really America". They are always surprised when I say that I love it.
Ask me if I would like to live in some city in Kansas or Oklahoma or Iowa etc etc and THEN I might choose H.K., which used to be a very lively, exciting city when it was a Brit colony.
The only thing that Gary,Indianna or Cleveland,Ohio have going for them (in my book,I apologise and don't mean to give offence - I am sure that there are people who adore these cities)) is that I could leave whenever I wanted to. I am not so sure that I would have that same right in today's Hong Kong.
But my city of choice where I could have everything? Freedom, liberty, beauty, culture, and excitement,
Paris, Rome,Madrid,
Barcelona,
London,Vienna,

Hong Kong... Hong Kong is less polluted than New York... New York has a bad reputation for its crime rate... Of course Hong has its fair share of crime, what with the Chinese mafia frequenting it and all... But the way I see it, even if New York has a lot of opportunities, so does Hong Kong... And it's a lot closer to home...

Hong Kong!
I do know how to speak Mandarin ( I lived in Taiwan for seven years, ) so I can get by and I am still learning English.
I've been to both Hong Kong and New York each for just a few weeks. To be honest I was very scared in NY.
I saw crimes committed in front of my eyes and others and no one doing anything, or just saying' I don't want to get involved.'
I was shocked, appalled and horrified. I wouldn't want my daughter living there.
I myself would personally prefer to live in HG. If it wasn't so expensive for a poor soul like me I'd be there now!
New York has it's charms for many, obviously but not for this Moroccan gal.

I do know how to speak both languages- in fact I came from China originally. There was and is a reason I moved to the United States. The Chinese censorship now, the oppression then and somewhat now.
Definitely New York (I now live in CA).

Hong Kong. I'm from LA, and hate NY. There are only 3 things good that ever came from NY. My Aunt, Billy Joel and Deli food. New York is so crappy they had to name it twice.
Besides, I think it's freezing today. It's 50 degrees. Imagine how well would I do in NY weather.

Hong Kong Baby. Flights to Thailand, Vietnam, and the Middle East would be so much cheaper.
