Both are using Windows XP S2. One is about five years old and I just got the other one for Christmas. The older one has cable internet right now. I have a cable modem sitting next to my keyboard. It has a cable coax wire going into that, then it has another cord coming out of it and into the back of my computer. That cord looks kind of like a large phone line. Could I just buy another one of these cable modems and hook it up to my new PC and use the internet on both computers like that? Or would I have to buy a crossover cable? If I have to use that cross over cable thing how long are they? Because one computer is in one room the other is in a room on the other side of the house.

If you have a spare hole on the rear of your modem ... all you need is another cable ... an ethernet (network) cable can be 100Mtrs (300ft) long

If you have cable, you actually should have your cable plugging into your modem and another cable (not DSL) plugging into a router going into a line in on your router. Most routers have two line outs. From your router (not the modem), you currently have a phone like cable (generally blue in color) going from the router to your old computer. The cheapest way to use the cable for both computers (to add another computer) is to buy a cable (like the one you have between your router and old computer) and connect one end to the new computer and the other end into line out 2 on your router. Nothing more. If you do not have to jacks with 2 input to lines in the router, you will need to purchase a router that has two lines. It's that simple.

Regardless of what type of router you have, your speed will beat any wireless on it's best day on any of the most expensive routers being sold today.

If you cannot wire both, you can get a wireless router, that will connect with your new computer that is furthest away. Brand new $40-$60 for a router. For that type, Linksys is the preferred router of choice.

The cheapest way is to hook one computer up with a USB cable, directly from the modem, then hook an Ethernet cable directly from it to the other computer. Though this may be impractical unless both your PC's are close together.

The best way to do it is going to end up getting a router, a device which splits the connection so multiple computers can use it, the most efficient ones cost only about 60$.

Hope the info helps.

buy a router basically a box with 5 plugs your line coming out of modem that goes to your computer would go into 1 of the holes of the router then out of thr router to your old computer second hole would go to new computer with a cat 5 cable that is the basics but since your new computer is across the house consider purchasing a wireless router which cost more and is a bit more complicated. conect your smartest computer 1st to the router and the older one 2nd. the 1st option is the cheapest but not the prettiest unless you run the cable through the attic or even outside the house. 5 port router d-link $20-$30 cat 5 cable 100feet maybe $30. wireless router $40-$200 aprox............good luck

Another Cable Modem is not the answer!! What you want is a router. Your local electronics store will sell these for anywhere between $50 - $100.

It will connect between your modem and your PC in your current setup, but has (typically) 4 ports on it, so you can plug in your current PC that is plugged into your modem, plus 3 other PC's.

Easy to setup, great solution!
