The only way is to spend time with the horse. You need to be dominant, but friendly- think of it as a supporting older sister or friend. You need to discipline your horse when they need it, but are there many more times with soft words, treats, or petting. Another way is to keep it fun for the horse- do jumping one day, trails the next, obstacle courses, etc.
Some horses trust a person immediately, others take years to bond. My current mare took about a year to bond completely with me, and now will do anything I ask off of just body language cues, and gets excited and comes up whenever she sees me, because she knows it is riding time. If I don't come out to see her for over 3 days, she gets pissed and won't let me catch her- that is how I know that I mean something to her :)
