i don't think that you can put an exact date on the origins of superstition. it's been there from the begining. since the ancient times people have believed in it in different ways. i think that it stems from lack of education. other factors like culture and upbringing and personal experience may play a part. people don't want to admit that thier own doing had anything to do with the outcome of something, they'd like to blame it on something or someone else.

but educated people can have superstitions as well. and what might be superstitious for one person might not be for another. i don't consider myself to be a superstitious person. but i am a little bit. like small things, one example is i went to a friends house and her mum started complimenting me on my nails, and how long they are and how nice i had done the design on my nails, when i got home, i was sitting on the sofa and the throw rug came off, so i put it back on the back of the sofa (very gently without pressing hard on my nails) but 4 of my nails snapped all at once and it was freaky. and i blamed it on the compliment that the lady gave me!!!

but some superstitions in our society are:
1. lucky/ unlucky numbers
2. opening an umbrella in the house is considered bad luck
3. break a mirror and u'll have bad luck for 7 years
4. black cats
5. jinx
6. clairvoyancy(false clairvoiants)
7. itchy hands, nose, foot.. blah blah.
etc etc....

Wow! Alot of broad questions you have asked. The simplest origin for superstitions is that our cavemen ancestors were terrified of the world around them. Perhaps a bolt of lightening killed their cousin Grog so a superstition would have evolved around lightning. And auntie stepped on a crack in the ground and at the same moment her mom fell over with back pain....Ta da! Another superstition was born! I am not sure of an exact percentage of people who are superstitious, but I would imagine most everyone is to some more or lesser extent. I hear in every day conversations things like "knock on wood that won't happen again" or "you bet your lucky stars!" And that is what charm bracelets are all about superstitions or just necklaces with charms. It is all around us some we do subconsciously. It is something we have carried over from our past ancestors and will always be part of our lives.

There are a large number of superstitions and each one originates from different things at different times. Most people tend to believe in some superstition or another. No, I don't believe in superstitions.
