oil was fine two weeks ago, i checked for leaks under car and found none. it was making a noise earlier, it would come and go. it is running fine, no lights on dash, not overheating. i added some oil and the noise stopped. it is a 2004 chevy cavalier with 68,500 miles on it. nothing else seems wrong. i have heard that it could be fine or it could be a head gasket. i do not smell coolant and the level of the coolant is fine.

Okay, NOW we are combining the two professional skills of a coffee server and auto technician.

If you are talking about a TRUE latte color that would be one with milk in it. Therefore the oil in your car has WATER mixed in it. We call it in the industry, a milkshake, but with the increase in Starbucks I can see how the demographic got moved.

Now, you need to find out for sure. You do this with a coolant/block test. it is best done by a profession al as it involved a kit and some chemicals and an intrepertation of the liquid color-NOT a latte.

Then you can get on with your life.

A lot of the time in the winter, moisture and condensation from the cold damp air will make the dipstick have that milkshake look like a head gasket does. This is especially true if you take a lot of short trips or drive in a lot of cold wet weather. lots of water gets drawn in through the intake and some will condense in the crankcase. Old escorts were really bad about this for some reason. Change your oil every 3000 miles check your P.C.V. valve to see if it is clogged up and your air filter too.If you have a 3.1 or 3.4 be aware that the plastic intake gaskets on these blow out a lot, make sure of your coolant level. If the oil looks O.k. when drained you are probably alright, but always be suspicious if coolant level does drop

First of all to check for any leaks have a mechanic do a pressure test to your radiator with a pressure tester.......that test will show him any and all leaks in your engine compartment.
You do not need oil changes every 3000 miles, that is bunk from the oil change joints to make a ton of money.... every 4500-5500 is plenty good if you are not on a dirty, dusty road every day.
Adding oil will not stop noises...plain and simple!!!
By the way did you check to see if your oil filter was loose and leaking little by little?????

Maybe burning oil/ which means oil is getting in firing chamber? suggest you take to shop? change oil add stabilizer with like bardhals or stp? run another week check oil ever day if same thing happen again (SHOP time!!!) for sure before you blow-up engine...
check tail pipe if it smells bad!! rotten eggs/ or burnt gym socks (oil). oil doesn't have show leaks to be bad or burning it..gaskets to think of pan, valve cover, and head-gasket, freeze plugs too.

I dont mean to be snippy but if you dont Chang your oil every 3,000 miles dont expect to drive this car past 120,000.. When you Chang your oil Waite a day or three and if it appears milky you got a problem : ( you might consider a oil flush in a bottle just follow the instructions. peace.
