The earth would be sentient the same way your finger nails or hair are.
We are part of the earth and we are the sentient part of it.
The universe is also sentient in that we and other aliens act as the eyes and ears of the universe and give it self awareness.

It might make a perfectly straight line of volcanoes in a binary code.

Edit: ohhh, you did say sentient, not intelligent. Well, if it is eager to communicate, I guess I can assume it has some intelligence.

I don't think it would want to talk to us, it would be like us talking to bacteria. What I would do if I was Gaea, would be call a doctor. "Hello Dr. Pluto? I got these itchy sores spreading over my body, they smell bad, and and I got a fever, what should I do?" "Take three large Asteroids and a Comet and call me in the morning."

She does communicate with us, by means of volcanos, hurricanes, tsunamis, tornados, and earthquakes. She's pissed, and I don't blame her.
