Patio furniture is expected to sit on a solid surface and thus may have smaller leg ends or be more upright like indoor furniture. Lawn furniture is expected to sit on grass and soil and thus has wider ends or tubes that run across the bottom. Lawn furniture is usually either heavier to keep it from blowing away and to withstand more weather or very light to ease picking it up, folding, and storage. Patio furniture is medium weight, heavy enough to stay in place, not as bulky to permit moving past it in the more restricted space of the patio.

Patio from Spanish for courtyard.

Patio furniture goes on a patio, and lawn furniture goes on a lawn which is an area of grass or other ground covering plant life.
