Why does usnews.com list princeton, Cal Tech, and Harvard (schools i would love to attend) as the three universities where students come out with the least amount of debt? How can this be when the schools cost nearly 50 grand a year to attend?

Think about it this way.
People who get scholarships are more likely to graduate. Not only because they are more likely more academically prepared, twofold... they have high GPA's and the scholarship money. Those who have wealthy parents likely don't have to work and can focus more on studying if they don't have the strong academic background as those with the outstanding GPA's and scholarships.

US News is probably only reporting half of the data how about report the average debt of those who don't graduate? How much has the average Harvard Jr. dropout borrowed? Freshman dropout? Sophomore?

Plus, parents can usually can borrow a LOT for thier kids to go to these schools... no prob if they are willing... but again it wouldn't show up in the "students" reported data.

Therein lies the truth..

A large portion of the students come from wealthy families. Another large portion of the students come from families of limited means, and they benefit from federal aid as well as generous aid packages from the schools. I would imagine that many of the incoming freshmen were the best of the best in their high school, and they were able to get a lot of local scholarships.

well even though i hate this school[yale] because the kids there are so dumb they act like they cant cross the street! but yes im from new haven ct{home of yale university} if you are a student in new haven public schools {where its really nothing but black kidsproud african american} and you have good grades and you apply to yale they HAVE to automatically give you a scholarship because your a resident of new haven ct like this girl that graduated from my school last year she wasnt even the valedictorian and she recieved a scholarship to yale but they prefer someone who is interested in becoming a doctor or sumthin so they can pay you like 150 grand for working at yale university hospital

Because they offer so much financial aid. These schools meet 100% of demonstrated need. If your family income is less than $50,000 per year then it is free. And they offer good grants for people with higher incomes.
