Let's say p is the original price of the bed, then a sales tax of 6% is levied on p. Hence,
total sales tax in dollars = 6% of p
And of course, the total price after tax = original price + tax
Therefore, the equation becomes:
p+6%ofp = 360.40
=> p+0.06p = 360.40
=> 1.06p = 360.40
=> p = 360.40/1.06
=> p = $340, which is the original price of the bed (before tax)

supposed x: the price before tax
x+ x(6/100)= 360.40
x(1+ (6/100))= 360.40
x= 360.40/ (1+ (6/100))
x= 360.40/ (106/100)
x= 360.40 X (100/106)
so x= 340
so the price before tax is $340.00
you can check the answer by this way:
$340.00 + (340.00 X 6%) = 340.00 + 20.40( the tax for the new bed)= $ 360.40( the price including tax). So 340 or $340.00 is the right answer.
Good Luck.

write a proportion, cross multiply and solve

bed with tax 106
_________ = ______
bed before tax 100

to explain the right fraction. when you pay a tax youre paying 106% of the price. so if something costs 100$ with a 6% tax you pay 100 + .06x100 which is 100+6=106. thats the same as paying 106% of the price. same here.

take $360.40 [original] and divide it by 0.06 [6 %].
you should get a number followed by two decimal places.
now subtract that number from $360.40, and you'll have the price of the bed without tax.
