It could be something minor, like a short, or the engine saying " change my oil, or check my oil."
When it flashes, then it is time to worry.

when the check engine light comes on, most of the time it is for a emission type problem, usually a sensor. since these cars have an electronically controlled transmission, that could also be the problem. you need to have the trouble code read. this can be done if you have a code reader, possibly for free at an auto parts store, or for a fee at a garage. the problem could possibly shut down your car and leave you stranded (worse case), you need to have it check and the problem corrected. This light has nothing to do with any fluid type problem, (oil change, low antifreeze, ect)

Yes you need to have it looked at. Most of the time if your car seems to run fine, its something small. I wouldn't take it to a dealer, because they charge around 200 dollars to hook it up. I dont know if you are familiar with AutoZone. Its a big parts store chain in my area, and they will read your check engine light codes absolutley free. Their reader will spit back certain codes, each standing for differen't issues. The reader will not tell you the exact thing wrong, it tells you the things that are being affected by it. Once you have them read it, they will tell you the codes read back, what they stand for, and the proper steps to fix the problem. Orielly Auto Parts also does it for free also.

Yes, take it to the dealership and they will hook it up to a computer. Takes about 10 min. and they will tell you what the Taurus is in 'need of'.
It however may just be "due for the next service" - on the engine components! At which they wil reset the warning light on the dash.

Good Luck

To those who think it's because of an oil change, you might wanna read up a little more before answering these types of questions. Get it scanned, it's the only way of knowing. Could be something that's gonna cost a hefty penny to get it fixed, and it could be you just tightening up your gas cap. It all really depends.
